Etiquette for reading Quran
(Courtesy of Br Louai al-Haffar from
Graduate School of Islamic Social Sciences)
-
Start with spiritual and physical
purification. Allah (SWT) says in Sura Al Waqia, “In
Book well-guarded, Which none shall touch but those who are
clean”. [56:78,79]
-
Make up the right intention
by seeking Allah’s pleasure
-
Sit in a proper way. Preferably
sit facing the qiblah in humility, tranquility and respect.
-
Pray to Allah asking Him to
open our mind and heart to receive guidance, light, and knowledge
from the Quran. And to help us studying the Quran in a proper
way.
-
Concentrate fully and leave
aside all other preoccupations
-
Preferably recite Quran after
dawn, during night (17:78-79) or in the prayers. Allah
(SWT) says in Sura Al Isra, “
Establish regular prayers - at the
sun's decline till the darkness of the night, and the morning
prayer and reading for the prayer and reading in the morning
carry their testimony. And pray in the small watches of the
morning: (it would be) an additional prayer (or spiritual profit)
for thee: soon will thy Lord raise thee to a Station of Praise
and Glory! " [17:78,79]
-
Begin your reading with ta’awudh
(16:98) and each new chapter
with basmalah, but al-Tawbah. Allah (SWT) says, “When
thou dost read the Qur'an, seek Allah.s protection from Satan
the rejected one.” [16:98]
-
Interact with the Quran as
you read it. It is a message from the Lord of the seen and unseen.
For example, when there is a verse that:
* is glorifying Allah, praise Allah (make tasbih) (56:96)
* is about a promise or Heaven, ask for it (76:31)
* is about a threat or Hell-fire, seek refuge in Him (76:31)
* is about the bounties of Allah, say a thanks for them
* includes duwa’, repeat it and ask Allah from His mercy
* answering questions posed by Allah (95:8)
-
Observe sujud al-tilawah
