Shah Abdul Hannan
Shah Abdul Hannan completed his Masters in Political Science in 1961
and joined the civil service of Pakistan in 1963. He is currently
teaching Islamic ethics and Islamic political thought on comparative
political system in Asian U niversity of Bangladesh. He is a member
of the Darul Ihsan trust, founder of Darul Ihsan University. Currently,
he is also the Chairman of Islamic Economic Research Bureau, Director
of the Islamic Bank Bangladesh Ltd. and adviser to Bangladesh Institute
of Islamic Thought (BIIT). He was acting vice-chancellor (president)
in Darul Ihsan and Asian University at different times. He was one
of the founders of North-South University, the first and largest private
university in Bangladesh. He was also involved in the planning of
the Islamic University in Chittagong and was a member of the advisory
committee there.
Shah Abdul Hannan has considerable amount of writings on Islamic
economics and banking as well as social, cultural and women issues.
He worked with groups of Islamic scholars to produce two volumes
of "Economics in Al-Quran" and two volumes on "Codified
Islamic law", covering all possible aspect of Islamic Law,
in Bengali.
He was actively involved in Islamic works since he was a student.
He studied Arabic in Islamic Foundation, Dhaka from 1972 till 1974.
He was an ardent student of Islamic Sciences and studied, particularly,
tafsir, Hadith, commentary, usul-al fiqh, Islamic economic and banking.
He held many appointments and retired as the Secretary of the govt.
of Bangladesh in 1998. At different times he held charges of Social
welfare Ministry, Banking Division and Internal Resource Division
of the government of Bangladesh. While in civil service, he was
involved with establishing the first Islamic bank in Bangladesh.
Banking act was amended to facilitate Islamic banking and two more
Islamic banks were allowed to function when he was deputy governor
of Bangladesh Bank (central bank).
