" And of His signs is this, he created for you spouses from yourselves that you might find peace in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo, herein indeed are signs for people who reflect." (Quraan 30:21) Allah (SWT) in His infinite wisdom and mercy has created for us mates with whom we may find peace and share love and mercy. Prophet Muhammad (SAS) said, "those of you who can afford to get married must marry, for it is the best protection against a lustful eye and a strong shield for your chastity." (Bukhari and Muslim). On another occasion, the prophet said, "when a man marries he has completed half of his religion and he needs only to fear Allah to complete the remaining half." (Mishkat). In these messages, it is clear that the institution of marriage is of vital importance. Similarly, it is also of vital importance to choose a right spouse for a happy life and to be able to nurture an Islamic environment in the house. The prophet said, "women are sought for marriage because of their wealth, lineage, beauty and religion. So get the one who is strong in religion, may Allah (SWT) bless you. " (Muslim). This hadith indicates that even though the other three qualities are important, the one quality on which marriage is to be founded is religion.
